The
human form is an expression of presence, and one's strength of spirit
dwells within that form...Melisa owns Cadell Studios where she works primarily in figurative clay. The studio is located in Bakersville, a small rural mountain town in western North Carolina. In her young adult life she visited communities in the US, St. Kitts VI, and Belize to participate in mission type work. It was at this point she began to develop a respect for those who were neglected due to social, economic and racial lines. Looking beyond the surface of humanity, she began to be-come aware of the inner strengths and beauty of all people. Her educational training is in the fine arts. She grew up working under her father as an apprentice in his art bronze foundry. She received a BFA in drawing, painting and art education from the University of North Texas. She also studied in France, Switzerland and Italy while attending that University. Her fascination with the human form became increasingly evident as she strove for complex simplicity in style and content, as a painter and mark maker. The figure is more than a body -- it houses her subjects thoughts, beliefs and fears. After teaching 7 years in public education, she began working in clay. This move from painting to form was a powerful transition. Since then she has worked to record moments in time -- in people, their struggles, their joys and their journeys. When she is not in the studio, she is training with the Bakersville Vol. Fire and Rescue Dept. She serves her community as both a firefighter and first responder. She also continues to teach and guide workshops in drawing, painting and sculpture. Click here to learn more about Melisa's professional career. |
